quora

Why did Portugal get its ridiculous name it has now and what's the original ancient name for this land?

I put two hypotheses for the motivations of your question: either (1) you are an idiot or (2) in Serbian the word "Portugal" also means "orange" as in many other countries (I honestly don't know: one of those days in Belgrade, I unwittingly went into an underground car park and panicked because I didn't know how the Serbs write "way out". And still don’t...).

In spite of having seen your avatar, I assume that you are motivated by the second hypothesis.

And in that case, I suggest that you take a look at my answer to the question that has already been asked here at Quora, albeit in more appropriate terms and manners:

Is it a coincidence that the Arabic for "orange" sounds like Portugal? Or is one named for the other - e.g. did Arabs discover oranges in Portugal?

No. The word “orange” lets betray its Portuguese origin in the Arabic, Romanian, Turkish, Greek, Bulgarian, Albanese, Macedonian, Turkish,  Bulgarian, ... languages. The Portuguese brought sweet orange from China, started its production in Europe (in places where there are few of them nowadays, like Azores, for example).

edit: But I only found out the reason it spread so far when I read a comment on a video about the wars between portuguese and the ottomans.

Yalan Tarih wrote: “Ottoman sailors saw a strange fruit in the hands of Portuguese sailors and named it "Portakal" that used to mean Portugal in the old speech( Portakal oglu meant Portuguese - literally son of Portugal). Today we call the fruit "orange" Portakal in Turkish, reminiscent of the old times in war - and also friendship - on faraway seas.”
