"Into the hollow spaces of Josquin's [des Prez] biography stories soon began to creep, to give him a life that matched the power of his work: that he worked not by dull theory but by a second sense, which allowed him to construct music of unparalleled complexity and to modify it almost without thought, as another man might run his hand through his hair; that he was prized by kings above their wealth, but did not sell himself to the highest bidder; that he wore his brilliance so lightly as to compose masterpieces to serve as practical jokes, as when a new motet set to the words 'Remember O Lord thy servant' was sung before the French king in order to remind him to pay Josquin what he had bloody well promised.
What exactly Josquin did was hard to put into words, though few would say his reputation was undeserved."
Edward wilson-Lee, A History of Water, Being an Account of a Murder, an Epic and Two Visions of Global History, William Collins, 2022, pág. 57
